This Refilling America environmental stewardship and fund-raising program makes a great, practical classroom exercise in recycling, reuse, green cleaning chemistry and eco-economics.

Recycle. Students collect particular water bottles from family and friends. Plastic water bottles that are sturdy and can fit a standard sprayer top.

Refill. The easily cleaned bottles are filled locally with Green Seal Certified, non-toxic optionsforlife cleaning products and relabeled with slip on, easy-grip silicon bands developed specifically for the Refilling America campaign.

Reward. The newly packaged cleaning products are sold to student body and community family and friends. A large percentage of the sale goes to the school for educational supplies.

Project activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • teachers and students researching or conducting local waste stream characteristic studies to get an idea of what and how much waste is produced and proposing ways to reduce the various waste streams;
  • students determining how much local plastic spray bottle waste can be eliminated by refilling original cleaning product bottles or water bottles instead of continually buying and discarding new ones;
  • students preparing public service announcements encouraging people to recycle, refill or otherwise reuse various common product containers; and
  • school establishing local Refill Stations as an on-going fund-raising program.
