And what, you may ask, is DMDMH? DMDMH, or Dimethyl Dimethylol Hydantoin, is a preservative. It's used in detergent based formulations because it combines the benefits of broad spectrum antimicrobial activity with the ease of liquid handling. At our use level, it is non-irritating to eyes, skin and mucous membranes, retains its activity between pH 3-8 and is compatible with most personal care ingredients. DMDMH is highly water soluble and belongs to the preservative class of formaldehyde donors. Formaldehyde is found widely in nature, e.g. in fruits as apple and grapes. Human blood and the blood of every mammal contain 2-3 ?g per liter formaldehyde, which is needed to produce other bodyowned substances. Formaldehyde is produced by every living cell from the basic modules of life: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Formaldehyde, the typical preservative in nature is effective at very low concentrations.
Do we really need a preservative? Well, yes! Bacteria feed on natural plant extracts just as we do. When added to natural products in very small amounts, preservatives help to boost the antibacterial benefits of natural ingredients. Some natural bacteria fighters such as Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary and Vitamin E are only effective against certain types of bacteria and only in very high concentrations. High concentrations of these substances may cause skin irritation and break down the effectiveness and stability of the product they’re supposed to be helping.
