And what is DMDMH? Water and natural plant extracts - the basis of our ingredients - can, over time, breed bacteria. This is the case with all natural, true 'green' and non-petroleum-based cleaning products. DMDMH, or Dimethyl Dimethylol Hydantoin, is a preservative. It's commonly used in detergent based formulations because it combines the benefits of broad spectrum antimicrobial activity with the ease of liquid handling. At our use level, it is non-irritating to eyes, skin and mucous membranes, retains its activity between pH 3-8 and is compatible with most personal care ingredients. Synthetic preservatives extend the shelf life of the products they’re in. Products that contain these preservatives have a shelf life of 12 months or more depending on what that the product is -- more than the normal shelf life of 3-6 months of a natural product with no preservative.
There ARE some natural bacteria fighters such as Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary and Vitamin E, but they are only effective against certain types of bacteria and only in very high concentrations. High concentrations of these substances may cause skin irritation and break down the effectiveness and stability of the product they’re supposed to be helping.
