A few facts about MSDS's:

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is designed to provide workers and emergency personnel with the proper procedures for handling or working with a particular substance. MSDS's include information such as physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point, etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment and spill procedures. These are of particular use if a spill or other accident occurs.

MSDS's are only required for materials that are hazardous. Often times, however, manufacturers are asked for MSDS's for products that have no hazardous ingredients. Manufacturers are under no obligation to produce MSDS's for non-hazardous materials. As a matter of fact, OSHA discourages the production of MSDS's for non-hazardous materials.

Even though optionsforlife products are non-toxic and, therefore, non-hazardous, we do produce MSD-Sheets. We have found that our commercial clients (especially those seeking LEED certification) and most people that care about their health and that of the environment want to know exactly what they are exposing their workers or themselves (or their children) to when they use cleaning products. Some people, for example, are allergic to certain surfactants and fragrances found in many soap and detergent products.

Speaking of soap and detergent products, ours are actually designed to come in contact with human skin and, therefore, are safe for even the most sensitive skin. Accordingly, they do not require special or emergency handling instructions – the main function of MSDS’s. For commercial purchasers of our soap and detergent products that request MSDS’s for their records, insurance purposes, LEED certification, et al., we issue the following OSHA-approved statement:

optionsforlife soap and detergent products are not considered to be or to contain hazardous chemicals based on evaluations made by our company under the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200."
